Design of the Medal for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

The medal for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games is designed with inspiration coming from “bi”, China’s ancient jade piece inscribed with dragon pattern. The medals, made of gold and jade, symbolize nobility and virtue and are embodiment of traditional Chinese values of ethics and honor, sending forth
    strong Chinese flavor.

The medals are 70mm in diameter and 6mm in thickness. On the front side, the medal adopts standard design prescribed by the International Olympic Committee. While on the back, the medal is inlaid with jade with the Beijing Games emblem engraved in the metal centerpiece. The design inspiration of
the medal hook derives from jade “huang”, a ceremonial jade piece with decoration of double dragon pattern and “Pu”, the reed mat pattern.

Founder of Solid Strategic Missiles: Huang Weilu

Huang Weilu is a native of Wuhu City, Anhui Province. He graduated from the Central University in 1940 and obtained a master’s degree from the Imperial College of London University in 1947.

Huang has served as a senior technical consultant of the China Aviation Industry Corporation and a general consultant of the 2nd Institute of the corporation. In the late 1950s, he held the position of chief designer of fluid strategic missile control systems. Huang was leader in this field and
initiated the solutions of many key technical problems. In the early 1970s, he was engaged in pioneering developments concerning solid strategic missiles launched from submarines. He and his colleagues determined technical routines and projects that tackled key problems.

Determined to adopt several new technologies, such as underwater launching, Huang successfully developed China’s first generation of solid submerged ground missiles and ground-to-ground engine-driven solid ballistic missiles. This development made China the fourth country in the world that can
launch solid strategic missiles from nuclear submarines, and contributed to laying the technical foundation for China’s second generation of strategic missile research.

Huang was elected as academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991, and awarded the “Two Bombs and One Star Achievement Medal” in 1999.

    Higher Education

Between 1999 and 2003, enrollment in higher education increased from 1.6 million to 3.82 million. In 2005, the total enrollment in ordinary schools of higher learning and vocational schools was 4.75 million, 280,000 more than the previous year. Schools of higher learning and research institutes
enrolled 370,000 postgraduate students, 44,000 more than the previous year.

The contribution made by scientific research in the higher education sector to China’s economic construction and social development is becoming ever more evident. By strengthening cooperation between their production, teaching and research, schools of higher learning are speeding up the
transformation of research results into products, giving rise to many new and hi-tech enterprises and important innovations. Forty-three national university sci-tech parks have been approved or started, some of which have become important bases for turning research into products.
