    Kazak

    Expressing Love in Game

Girls pursuit is a favorite traditional folk game of Kazak girls and young men, and also a special way for them to seek their sweet hearts and express their love.

When the game starts, pairs of young men go towards the appointed target slowly on horses. On the way, a young man can express love at will to any girl he loves and the girl should not indicate any disagreement but only listen attentively. However, on the way back, the girl can pursue the young
man and beat him with horsewhip. If the girl catches the fancy of the young man, she just waves the whip over his head, or symbolically beats him one or two whips. If the girl is not interested in the young man, he inevitably suffers the hardship.

    Crossing River During Engagement

The bridegroom’s parents or sister in-law participate in the engagement ceremony and the process of engagement is unique and interesting. When the parents-in-law see the future daughter-in-law for the first time, the mother-in-low should present a piece of white cloth with design of scattered
small flowers and plants to the bride as the gift on first meeting, then goes forward to kiss her, and wrap a piece of white triangular cloth with several owl feathers around the bride’s head.

After that, four to five women encircle to scramble for the cloth with design of scattered small flowers and plants as wedding gifts. The one who snatches a patch of it is auspicious. What follows is a ceremony of crossing river, in which the bridegroom’s relatives and the bride’s brother or
sister-in-law cross a river or brook simultaneously, indicating that both sides should never pull back.

Singing in Antiphonal Style to Meet the Bride

A wedding of Kazak ethnic minority generally lasts three days. On the first day, the bridegroom goes with the groomsman to the bride’s home to meet her and escort her back to his own home for wedding. The second day is for rest. On the third day, a wedding ceremony is held. However, the
mischievous bridesmaid may hide the bride and the groomsman on horseback has to open a corner of the yurt and sing in antiphonal style with the bridesmaid. Only after he wins can he enter the door to meet the bride.

Ghee Smoke Driving Away Devils and Blessing the Bride

When the bride arrives at the bridegroom’s home, several female guests enclose the bride with a red curtain and cover her face with a veil. The bride enters a yurt accompanied by the bridesmaid. The bridegroom’s parents sit in the front of the yurt with a fire in front of them. The bride goes near
the fire. A female guest pours ghee into the fire, warms her hands over the rising smoke and makes a gesture of rubbing the bride’s face, which means to drive away devils and bless the bride.

    Agricultural Industrialization

With the aim of improving China’s agricultural competitiveness, increasing the scale of agricultural industrialization and promoting the all-round modernization of agriculture have been important issues for China’s government in recent years.

Now a pattern has been formed, spearheaded by some 600 key national enterprises and over 2,000 key provincial enterprises, and multifarious agencies connecting farmers with the production base. Some products and leading enterprises in certain sectors, e.g., corn processing, dairy industry and
chicken production, account for a major share of the market and play an increasingly important role in the development and pricing of their industries.

Since 2003, the state has set up six types of demonstration project for the industrialization of modern agro-technology, so as to boost the use of advanced technology for agricultural production, and increase foreign earnings from exports of farm products. These projects include industrialization
of breeding and cultivation of excellent new varieties and fine strains, of high-efficiency, eco-friendly planting and breeding technology, of water-saving and precision technologies, of pollution-free inputs (e.g., fertilizer and fodder) and the establishment of an agricultural information
    platform.

The “downstream processing of main agricultural products project” launched by the Ministry of Science and Technology, was listed as an important sci-tech project during the 2000-2005 Five-Year Plan period. This is directed towards research into key technologies and equipment for the downstream
processing of staple agricultural products such as grain and oil, fruit and vegetable, livestock and forestry products, into integrated quality control systems and into technology and equipment for quick testing agro-products. By the end of 2005, the project established and perfected the standard
for downstream processing of staple agricultural products and integrated quality control systems; it made breakthroughs in high-speed agro-product testing technology and equipment, on the construction of a pillar system for technology innovation in agro-product processing products, etc. It also
developed many famous products including chilled meat, soybean protein extract, and concentrated apple juice; built a batch of technological innovation bases and demonstration production lines; and, nurtured many notably innovative enterprises for downstream processing of agro-products.

    Policy of Pacification Through Marriage

Marrying daughters of the Han imperial family to the rulers of the minority groups was one of the foreign policies of pacification in the Western Han Dynasty (206BC-8AD). The policy had gone through two stages. At first, Han rulers took the initiative to marry daughters of the royal family and
offer valuables of all kinds so that the Huns could stop harassing the northern border of the empire. When Emperor Wudi was in power, it was the Huns who proposed to Han for marriage.

In the reign of Emperor Wudi, substantial resources were available to him as a result of his own successful policies as well as those of his predecessors. Consequently, he was in a position to take an active and offensive stand against threats of invasion. He sent three expeditions led by Wei Qing
and Huo Qubing against the Huns in 127BC, 121BC and 119BC respectively. By these actions, he drove them into the far north of Gobi, thus maintaining the safety of the Hexi Corridor. The threat from the Huns was resolved; however, they did not reach an agreement on the issue of the policy of
    pacification through marriage.

During the reign of Emperor Xuandi, the Huns was already in decline. And the ruler Huhan decided to pledge allegiance to Han by sending his son to Han as a promise.Emperor Yuandi, to further a good relationship between the Huns and the Han people, married Wang Zhaojun, a beauty at that time, to
the Khan. This action not only stabilized the relationship between the Han Dynasty and the Huns, but promoted economic and cultural exchanges between them.

Meanwhile, Han also marry daughters of royal families to rulers of Wusun tribe for pacification. In 71BC, Han in alliance with Wusun tribe gave the Huns a fatal defeat from which it never recovered.

The policy of marriage for pacification was an important policy helpful to the economic and cultural exchanges between Han and minority groups.
